Sharpenings - a few things to chew over

Welcome to the first issue of Yellow Pencil's new online newsletter.

It's driven by the launch of our brand new website and a burning desire to share a few bits and pieces about our favourite subject - Brand. We hope you'll find the content helpful, informative and maybe even inspiring.

Your Brand - Use It or Lose It

You won't find samples of our design work on the walls of our offices. You won't see any of our award winning advertisements, our innovative packaging designs or our cutting edge brochures.? What you will find however, are the brand identities of our clients. That's because I've always believed that Yellow Pencil's own value is simply and clearly defined by the success of the brands we represent.?Those logos on the wall remind me everyday of the businesses and organisations who recognise the value and importance of their brand and trust us to work alongside them to sharpen it and get the most out of it.
Our new website has just been launched at www.yellowpencil.co.nz and is built in much the same way (although there's more of our work on it because it's got more space than our office does !) It showcases the businesses and organisations who we believe are "doing it right" - adapting to the challenging environment by paying close attention to their brand and brand values.?
Recessions offer great excuses for companies to put their brand principles on hold - to cut costs, start 'doing it themselves' and look for the easy way out.  But brands don't grow by hiding them away. They grow and thrive through activity - and commitment to putting real investment and resources behind them.
We're really excited to be working with clients that have faith in their brands. While they may have had to cut costs in other areas, they have worked hard to maintain brand integrity - and the benefits, rewards and opportunities are there for all to see.
Now we have to practice what we preach and look carefully at our own brand. If our value is defined by customers who are doing it right - why would we want to be associated with those who are not ?

brand highlights throughout the year
It's been an incredibly busy year - not only for us but also for a lot of our clients. We'd like to share some of the projects and successes that have made it memorable for us:

Dairyworks opens new Christchurch facility.

July was the month we assisted New Zealand's second largest block cheese producer, Dairyworks, in opening their new Christchurch premises in Hornby.
On July 24th, the $2.5million facility was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon David Carter heralding the expansion of not only the factory itself but also the consumer market position held by Dairyworks in the sale of their cheese brands, Alpine and Rolling Meadow.

Dowsons Shoes put their best foot forward

It's been our absolute priviledge this year to work alongside one of New Zealand's most iconic retail brands - Dowsons Shoes.
Dowsons have been a recognisable part of the retail scene since 1938 - staying true to their brand values and business ethics through wars, recessions and huge changes in the retail footware environment.
We've welcomed the opportunity to work with the company, sharpening Dowsons Shoes brand through their marketing collateral, new website and instore point-of-sale. In October, Dowsons unveiled a brand new store in the Palms Shopping Centre - and are now looking forward to welcoming a whole new generation of shoppers.

New brand focus driven by clients

Brand values can't be taken for granted - which is exactly what Christchurch Accounting firm, Wood Rivers Hawes found when they undertook a customer satisfaction survey earlier this year. The feedback helped to identify, reinforce and reshape a completly new business offer and brand focus for the company.
They set about building a whole new business model to raise the bar on the delivery of accounting services - - based on providing a fixed price for their accounting work, delivered on a fixed day.
With a dynamic new identity created by Yellow Pencil, the company relaunched in September with a brand strategy built on Energy, Enthusiasm and Enterprise - as E3 Business Accountants.
